If you're buying new I would get the "Saildrive" version with a finer pitch prop. Gives more power low down. I had one on my 23' Hunter Liberty for many years and it was more than adequate.

Hi Robert,
thanks for that, just wanted to know if it could move the boat at a reasonable speed should the main engine give up on me, if it can make 5-6 knots at sea that would be more than adequate, as you say as long as it can get you back home safely thats good

Hi John
I have the same engine (long shaft) on my Family Pilot which I also use in the sea.
Unfortunately I can’t tell you what maximum speed it would produce as I have not tried it with full throttle but it pushes the boat 5,6,7 knots no problem with hardly any throttle and that was in a bit of a chop.
I’ve fortunately not needed to use it in a situation but I am perfectly confident it will get me safe or back to port.
Hope this helps
Robert.

I'm thinking about buying a 6hp Tohatsu outboard as an auxiliary engine for my Fishing 20. The boat is used at sea, any idea of the sort of speed a 6hp engine is capable of?
