I have a Honda 20 on my Pilot which I find is quite adequate for my needs, though like Derek I’ve nothing to compare it with. I generally run it at the lowest possible speed as I like running slowly and quietly; passing other boaters I’ve been asked if it was electric as it’s so quiet. For my needs on the river it has plenty of power though I’ve no means assessing its actual speed at full throttle. I guess that ultimately it depends on the sorts of speeds you like and your budget.
Regards, Nick.

Thank you for your comment, I,m airing towards the Tohatsu 25 which is the 3 cylinder version which should be quite smooth. I believe the Honda 25 is also 3 cylinder. I shall see what i can find in the few months as the boat has been pulled out for the winter.

I have a Honda 25hp on my Pilot used in identical circumstances to you. It's fine although I've have had nothing else to compare it to. It coped with well going upstream with quite fast running water following recent heavy rain.

Can anybody recommend a suitable size outboard for river use, I currently use/fitted a Mercury 9.9 command Thrust. But i find it on small size as it is noisy at 5 Knots and no spare power ? The River speed limit is 4mph upstream and 6mph downstream (measured over the river bed). The hull displacement speed is approx 6 knots.
I was thinking of getting a 25/30Hp as I don,t require planning speeds.
