This was covered on this forum in 2018 under Care & Maintenance, "Refurbing Hardy nameplates?". Basically, Rustin's Brass Restorer, then Rustin's Metal Lacquer is the way to go.

Hi Simon,

May not be very relevant for what you are looking for but here goes with what I personally would look to do were they my plates/boat!

A few years ago, we bought 3 matching replacement outside coach lamps for our house, we ‘splashed out’ and bought some what were sold as Stainless steel lamps, however, after a few years, they were starting to look not their best with some fairly superficial corrosion appearing on them (different grades of Stainless steel I guess!)

Anyway, having ‘shelled' out quite a lot for them, I was a bit reluctant to replace them so set about cleaning off the superficial corrosion, mostly just wiped off, then (and I add I have no shares or connection with) painted the coachlamps with two coats of ‘Smoothrite’ paint copper colour.
I would add that this wasn’t done in ideal weather and I fully expected to have to revisit them when the weather got better/warmer. (I didn't)

That was all 3 years ago and I have never had to retouch them yet and they still look really good and in truth, better than they did when new!

So, I would remove the Hardy plates and clean them up to the point I could paint them with a suitable colour metal paint and see how that worked, it’s my guess that they would look good enough (especially at a distance) to pass muster, a finish hopefully that would last until you needed to remove them and re-do the finish where needed!

Well that’s just what I would do, it would probably last longer and look better than tarnished plates, each to their own!

Good luck with whatever you do – perhaps a follow up article on what you did for the club magazine?
ATB

Col.

* I'm hoping that Simon Papendick - or anyone else of course, will be able to advise. The Name Plates on my Hardy 21 MS are in need of refurb or replacement. They are thin brass 30 x 8 cm. Having cleaned them a couple of years ago they've seriously tarnished again. I would be grateful for advice on where to get new ones and whether cast brass would work.

Many thanks
Simon

Hello Simon
Thanks for your reply.
I do not know which type of metal I should have but would be happy with either.
My Navigator was constructed in 1986.
I bought it with wooden name(name of the boat) plates on it rather than what it left the factory with. The environment agency said I couldn't have that name in their area as it was taken. I added an "I" (Roman Numeral for one) to the name and have it displayed with stick on names at the bow and stern.
I do not think there is room for me to engrave a "I" in there so am looking at alternatives.
Hardy Marine have given me a price for one but I will have to ask them which type of metal it is.
Many thanks
Rob

Hi Rob,
Which plates are you looking for as the early boats had thin name plates and the later boats had cast brass name plates.

Hi all
Apart from sending an email to Hardy Marine, does anyone know how to source the metal plates that say "Hardy" on the port and starboard, level with the wheelhouse? My boat is a Navigator.
Thanks
Rob
