May have to go down that road myself eventually, but going to try to keep it original as long as possible.
Your cover is a much better fit than mine...!

I gave up rubbing compound as it eventually got through the gel coat. I painted the hull in International Toplac Oxford Blue and it has lasted for the last 5 years retaining its colour very well allowing me to touch up any slight damage with a good match.

Thanks for that Kenny, it sounds as if what I should have used is "clear plastic release film". Makes sense. Any idea where I could get some? Is it simply a fairly heavy gauge polythene or something more special?
Cheers
Peter

Peter,
This comes in liquid form and is easy to apply. Vertical surfaces need clear plastic release film on top of gelcoat to hold liquid in place while it cures, this comes with the kit.

That's very interesting, is this product a paste or a fluid?

Gents,
I have used Gelcoat Repair Kit 34 - Ultramarine Blue RAL 5 kit from (product ID 2554) ecfibreglassupplies.co.uk.

Very pleased with pre-mixed colour match for my Pilot 20 hull colour, taking into account age, numerous compounds, polish and waxing over the years.

Regards,
Kenny

Update- found that the best colour match is "Smalt Blue". Smalt is apparently the colour of blue glass made using cobalt. Anyway, a good match. Couldn't find a paste in this colour, so used neat gelcoat, which is a bit too runny for vertical surfaces, but ended up with a reasonable result. Do better next time....!

Thanks for the further info. and detective work... I think there's still quite a thickness of gelcoat remaining, so I'm going to do a good cut and polish this lay-up. I did it by hand with Farecla products last Spring but while it looked great for a little while it soon faded back once in the water, so this time I'll use a power mop.
If it fades back again after that I think it will be a paint job..... Cheers.

A bit of tinkering with the spacing reveals something like Gel Coat 65PA Blue 1190, with the Scott Bader link:
https://www.scottbader.com/wp-content/uploads/17513_crystic-gelcoat-65pa-gelcoat-en-aug17.pdf . Possibly Blue 1190 is the colour code.
Hardy blue is notorious for fading/chalking with age and UV exposure, so it's not surprising that new gelcoat looks darker than what's on your boat. Options seem to be either find another blue to match your existing faded colour or recoat the whole thing in a new coat. On an inconspicuous part you could try a fairly aggressive rubbing compound or even wet & dry paper to see if there's any of the original colour beneath the faded layer but if the coat is already very thin you might take too much off. The perils of the Hardy blue stripe!
If and when you do get it back to the original colour, it's important to keep it that way with a good UV protection. I use Starbrite Premium Marine Polish for zero to light oxidation or for medium to heavy oxidation, Starbrite Premium Cleaner Wax. I've also found Meguiar's marine products good.

Hi, yes I'd picked up on the Oxford blue from a search, but it looks a bit dark. Can't get any Google results for the GC65,so don't really know where that comes from. Thanks for the reply.

Using the search facility on this site gives two possible answers:
GC65 pa blue 1190
Scott Bader Oxford Blue, Scott Bader, Woolaston, Wellingborough, Northampton

Does anyone know the best colour match for the Hardy blue gelcoat? I need to fill some holes and wing-dings on the Navigator. Found some on ebay listed as Oxford Blue, and another one says it's RAL 5005, but this seems to be Signal Blue, maybe a bit light. Clearly can't be too fussy on a 36 year old hull but would like to get it as close as possible. Any suggestions??
