Hi Graham
That was a good idea your dad had he had to think outside the box and makedo with whatever they had to hand I might come up with an idea like that or something similar I will have a look at a lock or two before I make it.
Frank.

Many years ago, my dad made a windlass "key" by fitting a handle (long bolt with length of copper tube over it) to the end of a large adjustable spanner. Adjustable to any and all lock spindle sizes!

Hey Peter.
Thank you for the link I have had a look at the measurements and I would think locks here and with yourselves should be the same. I will definitely take your advice and chat some boateng people here and have a look at their keys.
Thanks again Frank

Further Googling reveals that there can be four sizes of spindle in the UK, two straight (parallel sided) and two tapered. Some handles have all four holes. I don't know what the situation is in Ireland but as Irish canals were largely built in 'British' days, perhaps it's the same. I did find one link that gives dimensions for two of the types:
http://www.deuchars.org.uk/waterways/paddlespindles1995.htm
I guess that the definitive solution is to waylay a couple of canal boaters and measure their handles!
Peter

Hi Peter.
Thank you for your reply I did a Google search as well but could not find measurements either. I am going to wait until lockdown is over and then drive to our local lock and get the measurements the nearest lock to me is about 30 km away in a place called Shannon harbour. I will post the measurements when I get them. I plan to make a handle myself.

Welcome to HOC. Until someone comes along with the dimensions you need, Googling 'windlass lock key' comes up with plenty of hits but nothing I could find about the hole dimensions. It did however show that there are two sizes and most keys/handles have both. Peter
