Keith, thanks for your suggestion.

I have found a tough good quality 'tupperware' type of box that fits and sealed it to the outside with Sikaflex. It is more or less square. I have jammed tight in place between outboard well and port stern locker so isn't going anywhere!

Mind you, I'll keep an eye on it.

Hi Michael
The fact that your steering arm requires a hole in the outboard well suggest that you have a direct drive steering arm rather than a push pull fitting on the outboard which is a good thing. In discussion with my experienced outboard man when we were considering upgrading the steering he suggested that there was nothing specifically designed for the job but if you can find a suitable 'pot' of the right depth together with the right size hole saw then you can bond it into the hole preventing the risk of water ingress. However as your existing hole is a quadrant it becomes more difficult to drill a round hole as you have no centre. However If the quadrant is not too big you could bond a piece of ply on the inside and use that to centre your round hole cutter. Perhaps a paint brush pot or similar might do. Of course a bonded pot would stick into your locker space! I have seen this done on a Hardy.
There are almost certainly other suggestions and methods.Hope this is of use.

Our Pilot has a Suzuki DF50.

The outboard well has holes cut in it on the starboard side for control cables etc. There also holes that I assume are relevant to a previous engine. These all have grommets or are blanked off etc.

On the port side there is a quadrant shaped hole that takes the steering arm when the engine is on full lock, whether raised or lowered. This hole is 'open' ie, there is nothing behind it and in theory a breaking sea could find its way through and into the cockpit.

Should there be something there? Is it really worth it? What is the norm?

I must say that I have never experienced a following sea breaking into the outboard well....fortunately!
