David,
Which fuel gauge is fitted? Normally they were VDO units, it should be stamped on the back of the gauge and sometimes it's printed on the face. The VDO units tend to be reliable, though many intermittent issues come from loose connections on the fuel tank sender - or due to corrosion on the sender connections.
If not alreally done - do first check the sender wires and connections.
A few maybe fitted with Faria Gauges - overall they also tend to be reliable.
For replacement parts, ASAP supplies might be a good starting point - they should have replacement units if needed.
Best Regards
Simon
