Hi Philip .
Nice boat! A good 5hp Auxiliary should be fine for a Fishing 17 - but you'll want a Longshaft - especially in the chop. It would be good if you have an engine with a small internal tank and an external tank connector - and carry oil if the 5hp is a 2 stroke!! I had a 6hp Longshaft Fourstroke Aux on my old Sweetie of a Navigator 18 (Hauley) and that engine punched her along very well. I always thought a pair or 20hp or so would be a great reliable fit for the F17 - though the Fourstrokes might be to heavy - oh to dream.
She's not a self-draining boat - so make sure you have good bilge and deck pumping kit fitted - an electric pump on a float switch, a manual pump and a decent bucket or two as a minimum.
The usual Safety kit goes without saying!.
Then - have fun, I think Practical Boat Owner had almost 30 knots out of an F17 on test!
Best Regards

Thanks, Simon. 5HP enough, do you think?

Hi Phil - I don't know about the Small Isles but as for practicalities and precautions; My four rules are;
1. Never save a drowning dog.
2. Always wear your life jacket.
3. Have a backup plan for getting home that doesn't involve anyone else.
4. Congers Eels are never allowed on the boat.

I've inherited a 1988 boat with a Honda 40 o/b and have an idea to potter around the Small Isles next summer.
Whilst it doesn't seem entirely sensible, it doesn't seem completely stupid either, and i wonder if the forum has any thoughts on the practicalities and precautions, as well as the general doability
