Hi Rob. I have a pair of the 50hp 935CC yamaha fourstrokes - essentially your engine - though you may have the later slightly higher capacity 996cc version. I've easily pull started mine, I gave them a good length of rope (I used some spare dinghy painter - about 2m) with a knot in one end. Set the Ignition key on, ensure the kill cord is in and engine primed, It takes a bit to turn the engine at first, and then just keep pulling back in one motion - I just "walked forward" with the rope and "hey presto". She should start up. never wrap the rope around your hand, in case the rope catches on the flywheel. cheers Si.

Hello Does anyone have experience in pull starting a 50hp Mariner/Mercury Bigfoot 4 stroke outboard. As the powerhead in the case of my year of engine was made by Yamaha, this would also apply to the similar Yamaha engines, with 4 carburettors. It would probably also apply to most 4 stroke engines over 50hp, with a seperate pull cord that is stored under the engine cover, rather those attached permanently. I tried to pull start it before and was not successful. The cord was perhaps not long enough to turn the engine over enough. Thanks Rob
