If your Immersion Heater came from Cleghorn Waring it is probably a CW series device intended for a boat. This should have 2 thermostats, one is a safety thermostat, the other is to control the actual water temperature. The safety thermostat MUST be set above the water thermostat. 50°/60°C is adequate for the water, and the safety set about 20°C above this. Maybe they have been incorrectly set upon installation. There are instructions at http://www.jabscoshop.com/files/IMMERSION%20HEATER%20INSTRUCTION%20ZPWL3%20doc596.pdf detailing this If however it is the ENGINE calorifier causing this to trip it must be running quite hot and it might be worth checking the temperature/cooling water flow. On most inboard Hardy boats there is a check valve in the pipe for the water going to the calorifier, and you could close this and see if still trips. However I imagine the safety thermostat would still be tripped even if the immersion heater was turned off since it could already have been tripped by hot engine water on your voyage!

Has anyone experienced problems with their immersion heater tripping? When I originally bought my Mariner (Aug 2013) the Immersion heater did not work. I had it replaced but found out that only the 'Cut Out' had tripped. However with the new Immersion Heater installed I thought the problem was solved. We put the Immersion Heater on during our first cruise only to find that it wasn't working. I telephoned Cleghorn & Waring on our return and they said that the temperature of the water heated by the calorifier was greater than the 'High Temperature Cut-Out Thermostat' and therefore tripped it. I should NOT switch on the 'Immersion Heater' until the water had cooled. This sounded reasonable. We have just got back from a 4 day cruise having adopted the above procedure but found that it still tripped. Has any other Member experienced this problem before I get back to 'Cleghorn & Waring'?
