* CARE OF PLASTIC PORT LIGHTS. Over the years we have been helping folks who wonder why their plastic hatches and port lights get crazed resulting in replacement. For those who may not be aware there is no cure for this, but there is a simple prevention for un affected items. The cause is sunlight which is resplendent with ultraviolet rays which heats and shrinks the surface of many plastics including Gell coats too. As the plastic shrinks it cracks at the surface which causes the crazing. The cure is very inexpensive and if carried out regularly is a PERMANENT PREVENTION. That cure is an application of most polishes either boat or car which contain UV repellent. We use 3m's Boat Polish which contains Teflon but most car polishes also work well. The trick is REGULAR APPLICATION especially during the summer months when UV is high. Again we do this four times a year with NO crazing EVER. Hatch covers are a good way also if you like them. Hope this is of help. There is also a second benefit here in so far as you want to go you can improve all of your plastic awning and spray hood clear window panels and prevent them going off colour and even cracking and will look like new if you polish them inside and out ONCE then use the OFF CLOTH that you use for the port lights every time you do them. They will look great! Kind regards to all Ken Herbert. New member.
