I chose the M120 sport tabs for my Pilot. It has the inset, altered angle panel in the centre part of the transom. I’m not sure when this was introduced (mine’s from 1996), but it is somewhat limiting with regard to the simple fitting of tabs. Ideally, I would have liked to have them extend fully to the outside edges of the transom, but due to the transom ‘step’, they had to be inset somewhat. In order to avoid fouling the outboard on ‘full lock’, the maximum span was limited, so the 10” span / 12” chord of the M120 seemed a good compromise. (It would be possible to fit a wider tab if it were to be cut across the inner corner to clear the outboard leg, but, given the interaction problems I had experienced with hydrofoil fins, I personally didn’t want them that close to the prop). I haven’t seen the transom of a Bosun, but if the whole transom has been re-angled, and the step is no longer there, then a wider span tab can probably be fitted, but the M120s would surely be OK either way.

Thanks Simon. That ties in with what I thought myself. Best Regards Nicholas

Hi Nicholas. Hauley (My Hardy Nav 18) has Bennett M80 Sport Tabs - 8" x 10" - they seem to work well - I certainly wouldn't want any bigger. (Bennett say the M80's are for 17' - 20' boats) I'm looking at Fitting Tabs to a family members Bosun - and have selected Sport tabs again - this time the M120 10' x 12'. (Bennett say these are for 20' - 23' boats) Judging by the Navigators performance I'd guess the M120's would be about right - but then again the smaller M80 may still just be ok.... The Sport tabs are narrower - i.e. take less transom space - but a little longer - this is pretty essential for fitting to the Navigator anyway! Hope this helps. Best Regards Simon.

I have decided on hydraulic tabs and have been corresponding with Bennett about details. I am rather surprised that they recommend tabs 18" wide by !2" long, with 12" by 12" as second best. Has any member got tabs as big as this? Any I have seen have been about 12" square. Regards Nicholas Duffin
