Hi James, I use to work for Hardy Marine during the 1980's and we glassed in ballast under the front bunk with about a 100lbs of shot ballast. I can never remember ever putting sand under the floor. As for the water coming out from under the cockpit floor. This happened when owner left the canopy down and filled the aft well and the water got under the floor. I just had that on another Hardy Navigator, it had the area under the cockpit floor full and took a whole day to get out with the boat pointing to the sky at the bow to get the water out. I changed the drain plugs and resealed them and the water problem as not come back. I would inspect the reason for the sand as it should not be there. Regards Simon J-Star Boat Services Former employee of Hardy Marine

Not sure if this is of any help as you have a reply fromn the professionals, but to my knowledge and experience , Hardys, use ballast usually sewn into blue canvas bags...and it is usually metal shot...so wet sand would need to be investigated thoroughly

James, I can run through the above with you if still a problem, look me up on the Hardy Owners club membership list. Pop rivits are wrong, terrible way to fit items below the waterline. Also sounds like the ply flooring is going. Not insurmountable though. The sand is a worry though... Simon. HOC Tech and Surveyor.

Hi. I have recently bought a 1980's Navigator. Looks to be in good condition. I am new to boats and have lots to learn. I plan to refit the cabin but would like to use it first over the summer and satisfy the first boat excitement. I opened the drain plugs in the recess in the floor at the transom. Water flowed out of all three. Is this normal? Also the floor section in front of this has a fair bit of give in it when stepped on. Don't know if this is ok or if it should be strengthened in some way? When I lifted up the table board in the cabin there is a 4'' hole in a sort of false floor and this appears to be almost filled with damp sand. Should I attempt to empty this or could it be ballast? I'm more worried that the hull could be leaking somewhere than anything else. The boat was sitting on a trailer for some time before I bought it. The depth sounder and speedo have been pop riveted onto the hull. Could this be a cause for concern? Thanks for any response. I'm sure I will have many more enquiries. James Carroll
