My thanks to John, who contacted me after speaking with Alison at the London Boat Show. I had been in contact with one of the Master Rope Makers at Chatham last year, with a view to visiting them and producing an article in the Hardy Owner magazine. This was not possible at the time, but I am pleased to say that I will be going to Chatham in the next couple of weeks to view both the original Victorian works and it's modern equivalent. I shall also be discussing the re-use of the internal wire in old fendering, and the supplying of new ropes to Hardy Owners directly, in the next issue of the Hardy Owner magazine in April.

Whilst at the London Boat Show I was talking to a representative from the rope makers at Chatham Historic Dockyard. They can supply Coir rope amongst others by the metre. For a Hardy Family Pilot I would estimate 13 metres long x 64mm diameter. The price they quoted me at the time was £6.36 plus VAT per metre excluding delivery charge, for which they will also quote. Contact name Alison Leonard 01634 827812. Their website address is www.master-ropemakers.co.uk It is fairly straightforward to replace the fendering as long as the old wire can be re-used. The lay of the rope can be opened up with a long screwdriver as the wire is fed through. The most difficult thing is to finish off the ends of the rope, although cable ties can be used for this purpose.
