Update. The transom pad has been fitted, during the engine service,& it has made a difference,I can put the engine cover on,& it no longer rattles, nor does the rest of the boat.It still feels harsher than the Honda, but if you compare the cost of the Tohatsu to the Honda,I think it may be down to a more basic engineering. The engine is performing quite well now, though,as it is getting run-in.

Tohatsu man called today, seems to think the problem is with the mounting. There is a thin alloy strip on the stern,to protect the edge & due to this, the engine mount is not completely flush with the stern. He is going to provide a hardwood mounting block,& will get the supplier to fit it between the mounting & the stern. Will let you know if it works!. Brian.

Hi Brian I have read a lot about Tohatsu on iboats.com and they have a very strong following in the US. They are often re-badged Yamahas from memory, and are known for their reliability. I have thought about buying one myself in the past as they are good value. It might be worthwhile registering with iboats and posting a question in the Tohatsu outboard repair forum. There are loads of experienced Tohatsu techs that could give you advice. It would help to post as much detail as possible including the model and year the revs that it occurs at and how quickly it takes to clear. At the very least it would give you another opinion. I would say it would be doubtful if the mountings had anything to do with it, unless of course the bolts haven't been tightened properly? I suppose on balance if the motor is new the dealer has to sort it for you. Good luck with your problem. Cheers Andy

Andy, Thanks for your reply,I will try that.Actually, the engine seems to work fine, now, just the vibration problem,& the little doubt in my mind over the initial problem. Cheers, Brian.

Hi,Andy, Yes,my previous engine was a Honda 25hp,no problem with vibration.Only changed as it was manual lift,& I was finding it hard work,as I get older!.I had problems with the Tohatsu from the start, engine seemed to be mis-firing,took it back,& they seem to have sorted that problem,I am wondering if the mountings are a lot harder than the Honda.I have contacted Tohatsu main agent, but no reply yet. Cheers, Brin.

Hi Brian Does the vibration come and go? Have you been able to confirm that it is actually coming from the engine? Cheers Andy

I have just had a Tohatsu 30hp 4stroke fitted to my Hardy Navigator,& am getting some vibration at around 6kn.The firm that fitted it say it is "resonance",due to the hull construction.I am not,of course happy with this explanation!.Has anyone else had any problems with Tohatsu?.My boat is a 1995 model, with white, full planing hull. Brian.
