Since no one came back to me on this one, I contacted Hardy. The answer is that the sea toilet is fitted to the deck with self tapping screws so it can be relocated without affecting the watertight integrity of the compartment below. Note however the requirement to position the pipes correctly as per the jabsco installation instructions.

My Hardy Pilot SE has the Jabsco sea toilet mounted athwartships ie pointing out into the cabin so that the door can not be closed while the facilities are in use. I've seen several photographs of Hardy Pilots for sale with the sea toilet mounted fore and aft (usually facing for'ard)which seems to allow occupancy with the door closed. It looks to me as if the pipes can be relocated, but the raised floor seems to present some problems which I haven't figured out how to get round yet - the deck curves up at edges preventing toilet going completely back along the bulkhead. I'm not sure what the significance of the raised area is and don't want to compromise any buoyancy tanks or strengthening fillets. Has anyone got any experience in this area?

Thanks Stephen - all things considered I went for a replacement chemical toilet (Fiamma Bi-pot 1520) as we're about to go back onto the water and I didn't want to encounter long delays when the sea toilet job went wrong (as it is bound to!!).

Fitting a toilet is not impossible , take a look at the Vetus website , download their catalouge and take a look at pages 78 /79 there are some good diagrams there that will show you what is involved. You will need to decide wheteher to have sea pump out or tank deck pump out or both that of course means the boat will need to be out of the water to fit the skin fitting through the hull. Everything else is straightforward except that the sanitation hose can be a devil to bend handle, unless you put it into a bucket of hot water first, same goes for when you need to attach the ends to joints. Tec tanks is another company that may be able to help you source a made to size waste tank and all the bits you may need.

Thanks Andy - your last comment served to make my mind up - the door really HAS to be able to close during 'operations'!

Hi Kerry Practical boat owner magazine a few months back had an article about a guy fitting a holding tank and toilet into an old 19 foot cruiser. What he did was well executed and good value and would be ideal for the pilot. The holding tank would fit under the starboard bunk. If you look on the YBW.com website you should be able to look back at the article list and buy the copy. If I come across the article I'll repost with the copy date. I have sat on the toilet of pilots with the toilet oriented both ways. I think I prefered the bow/stern way as I could get the toilet door closed and still sit down. A bit of a squeeze but managable. The other way you have to keep the door open. Cheers Andy

Has anyone had experience of fitting a sea toilet into a Pilot? At present we have a portapotti but with four of us on trips away it needs emptying every 24 hours. I'd like to use a holding tank rather than pumping straight out, but haven't a clue where to site it, as the bilge is inaccessible. Anyone done this before? Also, if so, is it best to mount the toilet facing for'ard or port? Any advice would be appreciated.
