I have a Yam 40hp 4 stroke on a Fishing 17 kept in a salt water marina. I flush using the built in hose connector with the engine not running. As an experiment, I attached the flush muffs to the lower leg, switched on the hose, and started the engine with the leg in the normal down position. The pee stream stayed fresh for the whole time. It looked like the water pressure from the hose was keeping the sea water out. Cheers Andy

For Dale In answer to your question, I think the Mariner is likely to be like my Merc, and this works for me. I have a Merc F60, and posted this info on iboats: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=203302

I have a 60HP Mariner 4 stroke, and have my Pilot on a swinging mooring all year round. Is there any way of flushing the engine witout using a hosepipe? I noticed that the water outlet is threaded can it be backflushed rather than having to suck upwards?

Andy Unfortunately I'm in the same situation as you. Ive a Yam 4 stroke 40 on my Fishing 17 that I keep at a marina. I have faithfully flushed with the hose attachment with the engine tilted and not running. I was disappointed to realise the issue with the thermostats not opening. It's obviously better to flush while running the motor. I considered doing this at the marina but am not sure if a 4-stroke can be run fully tilted due to lubrication issues. I also wonder what would happen if you put on the muffs and lowered the leg with the hose on and then starting the engine. Would the pressure of the fresh hose water keep the sea water out? I suppose you could test this by tasting the water comming out of the pee hole to see if it was salty. In any case, I have never seen anyone flush an engine in my marina. I have even been asked by puzzled outboard powered boat owners what I am doing. Cheers Andy

Hi Andy Unfortunately, I can't help you there. The Suzuki manual for the 70 hp provides a step by step guide on how to flush the engine, using the flushing plug and ear muffs (engine running). Regards Ian

Hi Andrew I'm also in a marina all year round and flushing the engine is quite simple. Facing the stern of the boat, on the rigt hand side of the engine leg you will see a black plastic cap with a figure grip on it. Turn the cap anti-clockwise to remove the it, this can be done with the engine fully tilted out of the water, screw in the hose pipe connector. The one I have is made by hoselock, it is connector you fit to an out side water tap, threaded at the end connecting to the tap and a snap fit at the other, can be purchased from Homebase, B&Q or any gaeden centre selling hoselock equipment. Once you have this screwed into the flushing hole connect the hose pipe to it, this should also have the female connector fitted. Turn on the water tap and flush your engine. I have never heard off taping up inlets etc. The engine is out of the water and not running when you are flushing, I flushed mine yesterday morning. Hopes this helps Regards Ian

Can you help im in a marina all year round, flushing my engine is a problem, i cant lift it up to put muffs on, will not run ,and when i put muffs on then drop it down, I never know if they have fallen off .Suzuki tell me to tape inlets up and use a hose pipe connector onside of engine this is to my mind not practical as lower leg is always covered in grime and where do you get connector for engine they tell me its just a standard hose pipe connector is that uk, or ,usa?
