I have just bought a pilot 20 and the fender rope is about to fall off. The boat is in the water, so I cannot get down the side to look. Could somebody please tell me what the fender attaches to, or how it is held on so I can do a temporary fix before I lose it?

Question Re Fender Rope around boat - Hardy Family Pilot - the outside wears away so i have heard that people put other types of rope around it which is cheaper than buying a new fender rope. Does anyone know about this and does anyone know how to go about it? Thanks, Alex

Two things Jim . . . One the navigator will cope with choppy conditions . . but not that comfortable ! The other . . I have a 4 stroke 45 hp , and wouldn't like to have less power than that really. If I tell you I refer to my boat as the 'Bobbing Cork' sometimes this might give you some idea ! Due to the length and hull design I think it makes a better Estuary / River Boat . . . only my opinion ! ! !

I bought a new rope direct from SSCS Lifting in Gt Yarmouth, who supply to Hardy's, and they fashioned it in 24hrs. The price, when compared with what I paid Hardy's 6 years ago, was 10% cheaper even now. The size of the fender rope came out to be 38ft 3ins from thimble tip to thimble tip, and the diameter was 48mm. I fitted the fender in just under 1hr 30mins, and I'm sure that with the experience, I could easily complete the task in just over an hour. I used cable ties to secure the for'd part of the rope, and tensioned it using a rachet lashing. My intention now is to remove the rope every year in the autumn and allow it to dry out in my workshop, refitting it in the spring. The old rope was still in pretty good condition apart for the rot in-way-of the freeing ports, and the moss growth. I also replaced the wooden fender support on the port side without too much trouble, and there were a few tips I picked up whilst doing it, but that's another story.

Is the rope on a Pilot SE the same diameter 48mm and does anyone know the length required?

Does anyone know the ''new'' diameter of the rope fender for the Navigator 18? I have measured the one on the boat, and I have been given 2 diameters of coir rope by SSCS lifting - 48mm and 72mm and one measures too small and the other too big, in comparison to the one on the boat. The rope naturally swells, but I would like the reasurance before I order. Regards.
