Thanks very much, I had all but given up hope of anyone replying.
Until the lottery win comes my way planning will only be a dream.
A new prop withount the odd nick and bend may make all the difference, I'll update the forum once its been trialed.

If you are reaching max revs then your set up is spot on. The holy grail for outboard powered boats is to hit max permitted rpm at wide open throttle with your normal load. This means your engine is working at it's most efficient. Of course you don't have to run at max revs, but at any revs you will be giving the engine the least work to do.
50hp is a little on the low side to get planning performance on a Pilot. Especially with 4 people on board. This may be where your problem lies. Pilots also work well with trim tabs. Tabs are much better than a fin on the outboard leg. 'Smart tabs' are highly recommended trim tabs that are chep to buy. Check out Dominic Gribben's posts on this forum. He did a round-Britain trip in a Pilot. There is also loads of good info on the forum about engine size.
I have a f40 on my Fishing 17 and am very pleased with it.

Can someone recommend a prop size for a 20'pilot circa 1983, fitted with a Yamaha F50 four stroke?
We generally carry two-four adults and a couple of children.
Currently fitted with a 11 3/4'' x 10'' prop, spins up to max revs well but doesn't seam that efficent at pushing us along.
Any thoughts or experiences greatly appreciated.
