Clunking when engaging gear - Hardy Bosun

From Maurice Millen (No. 2631) 03 Feb 12

Last March we bought our first boat, a Hardy Bosun. It is fitted with a 90 HP Mariner outboard – which is large but apparently not unknown.

The only significant issue we have with Skipjack is selecting gear. Moving into forward is something of a clunk but selecting reverse is more of a clunk plus a crunch. I have had this briefly looked over by an engineer and have checked that the motor is idling at the correct speed.

It makes low speed manoeuvring a bit painful but I wondered whether Bosun or Pilot owners had experienced anything similar?

An unusual point worth making is that the control unit functions as you would expect with reverse engaged with the handle moved aft, and forward the other way. However, the factory fitted markings on the remote control box show R at the front and F at the rear. This may be irrelevant – but certainly caused some hilarity on our first outing!
