Our 1998 Pilot SE doesn’t have a self draining cockpit.
Automatic bilge pump at the stern under where the removable tanks are.
All water in the cockpit works its way to this area- including wine (apparently ????)

Hi Annina, and a very fine craft the Hardy Fisher 20 is too. I am aware the 20 boats including the 20 MS have side scuppers to allow water on the side decks to exit, didn't know the scuppers on the Fisher assisted in draining the cockpit but I guess that would make perfect sense, I presume it/they exits into the rather large splashwell the Fishers have to permit side by side OBs?

Sorry not that familiar with the Fisher although did consider one at one time, even though I don't fish! So few are Hardy's up this neck of the woods, took us 5 years + to find the MS18 we were looking for and nearly gave up!

What about the Fisher 20? That has scuppers with bungs to fit when underway

I was surprised that our MS 18 didn't have a self draining cockpit, it being a part time sail boat, I believe most sail boats have self drain cockpits on account they dont usually have a Canopy fitted when sailing, our last boat a Newbridge Navigator was self draining.
I recommissioned the original hand pump which was working just not connected to anything, installing pipework and a stuffing box below deck, also a completely separate electric pump, filter box and associated pipework, the two can be used together or independently of each other.

The hatch on the MS18 has a well moulding around the lip and it occured to me that connecting a suitable connector to this, with associated piping and another through hull fitting to exit out the transom would be fairly simple to achieve, wouldn't stop all of it as some would find it's way into the bilge, but it would help with some of it!

I am fairly sure the 20s will have a similar design access hatch moulded well in the cockpit floor that could be so fitted?

I know the MS 21 has self draining cockpit, probably the only of the small Hardy's to be so fitted, I wonder why this is the case (all should have been self draining?) as in my opinion, the great John Hardy and Colin Muddie didn't make that many mistakes with the design of their excellent boats!

Regards,

Col.

Don't think the cockpit on a 20 is self-draining? Certainly my Navigator isn't. Having always had sailboats in the past with self drainers it's a bit of a pain but you get used to it. Mine has a sump and a good bilge pump installed and it works fine (so far- fate can be tempted...!) Peter

I've just become the proud owner of a Hardy 20' 'Paleo' which is kept on a berth in Chichester. I sent the cover away for cleaning last week and then we had monsoon type rain in Chichester. When I went to the boat, the cockpit was flooded to the point where it was seeping over the lip into the cabin. I( hunted for the blocked drainage hole/s but to no avail.
Is the cockpit not self draining? It would be very unusual for any boat not to have a self draining cockpit. I think I'm missing a trick here. Any advise or ideas?
