Tony That's a shame. The official 12V/240V box also incorporates a cooling fan; if your fridge doesn't already have one at the back it might be worth adding one to your proposed transformer (and rectifier) modification. Anything to keep the beer and wine cool!

Checked rear of fridge and is unfortunately 12v only. May wire a dedicated transformer in during winter lay up. Currently back to using 12v batteries and re-charging. Thanks again. Tony

Thanks very much for all of the helpful comments and suggestions. John and Peter. Yes there is a wired in battery charger we use. We will be back on the boat in marina over the weekend and will remove the fridge and check the back for 240 capabilities. Thanks again Tony and Amanda

Tony I've experience of three Engel fridges fitted by Hardy and they have all been dual voltage. Are you sure that yours doesn't have what might have been an optional extra, and just needs a wiring modification? Mine had/have a box at the back to adapt to dual voltage but I think that such boxes are no longer available; when one of mine failed, my electronics expert was able to repair it. I'm sure you've thought of it but when you are in a marina can't you continue to run the fridge off the battery and charge the battery from shore power? I can't say I've noticed a difference in cooling rate between 12V and 240V but now you mention it, I'll see what mine do. You might like to see: http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?50618-engel-fridge-12v-240-advice . I've never used him and don't know if he is still in business but I made a note years ago of a marine fridge chap local to me: Paul of Haven Marine Fridges out of Ipswich 07968 378231

Have you checked the wiring to your fridge Tony as a some of these fridges were 240ac/12vdc just connected to 12v with the 240v not used. But if you already have a battery charger wired into your system this can maintain the charge of your battery and run the fridge while you are plugged into Marina power. If not getting one might be the simplest way of solving this and keep your battery topped up as well

We are thinking of replacing the current 12v only Engel fridge with one that can run 240 v whilst in marinas. Either that or wire in a 240/12 v transformer. The current fridge is built-in on our Hardy Mariner 25. Any members with experience of having done this? Some of the smaller fridges we have looked at seem to require bringing down to temp on 240 v running 12 v on journey and then reverting to 240. Not really feasible for a swinging mooring. Thanks Tony
