* And finally, to complete the story... The previously materialised mahogony plank has now had part of itself made into the new mast for Adele, and is now raised upon the wheelhouse, complete with HOC burgee, LED nav/anchor light, wire up the middle of the mast, and can be lowered for bridges, should the need arise, though we have no bridges in Fowey harbour! Personally, I prefer the mast on the top of the wheelhouse roof to give greater height for the nav light, looks, and I don't have an artificial tree in front of the windscreen to have to look through! Height is 860mm, routed internal channel for the cable, and basic plans are available if anyone is interested. I will endeavour to post more photos of making the mast on my website in due course, and will send Marie an article for the magazine should anyone be interested in more details. Clive

* Research goes on... the supposed piece of iroko I thought I had seems to have evaporated on some other job, but a suitable piece of unused 25mm mahogany plank has materialised in its place, so I shall be proceeding to my own design... I'm looking at 850mm tall inc. fixtures, without light, and a cross piece of around 510mm about 2/3 up. Angle of rake 15deg. I will post better measurements when done for anyone interested in doing same. Alternatively, should this be a better choice for others, I have also found a new source online, which seems to be the best by far of available online offerings... at Sealee Boat Masts, very reasonable prices £49 to £130 depending on whether you want collapsible, fixed or stem only, in ply, iroko or mahogany. The link is www.sealeeboatmasts.co.uk for full details. There are also some useful looking seconds from Sealee currently on auction on eBay. Meanwhile, I'm off to buy a new LED light fitting for anchor/combined steaming and stern light, and to figure out how the devil to get the wire up the inside of the mast if I make one! Current alternatives appear to be (i) drill, (ii) rout, or (iii) mumble a lot. Clive

Finally had a reply from Sheridan Marine - the dark mahogany Freeman 22 mast in Message 3 retails at a lovely £183.60 inc VAT plus postage, plus an additional £53.71 for the stainless mast base if required, making a glorious fairly round £250 or so. So unless ebay or gumtree or some-such just happen to come up with anything interesting, then I'm most definitely off to inspect me wood store and sharpen me tools!!! And if I make it nice enough, I'll take a piccie! Clive

* Thanks to Robert Sneddon who kindly sent me a link to a mast on ebay, but unfortunately too big for me, as I am intending to fit on top of the wheelhouse lid rather than ahead of the windscreen on the cabin lid. For info, here is a pic in case anyone else is interested, and quoted dimensions after enquiry are... W 26" at the top cross section H 52" D 11" at the base Ebay link (probably need to cut and paste) is... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Cabin-Cruiser-Boats-Wood-Marine-Mast-Tower-/291942583982?hash=item43f9224eae:g:3roAAOSw44BYKbK6 Current bid is £11.50, 5 days to go. Clive, Ouch very expensive. Prefer your version, much simpler design and looks like it would be more in keeping with Hardy lines. Kenny

* Hi Kenny, Thanks for that, price appears to be around £174 inc. VAT though not sure which of three sizes as yet, for the teak mast pic in your message. I have also found another short mast available from Sheridan Marine as attached photo, referred to as fitting the Freeman 22 (this one being mahogony, height 0.89m). I am chasing price of this item. Third option so far seems to be check out what odd bits of mahogony or iroko that I may still have in the garage and sharpen my tools! Will keep everyone posted (sorry, pun a bit rough that one!) and still interested to hear of what others may have done. Thanks, Clive

Hi all, Just out of the water at the end of the season, and I'm already planning jobs for the new season... I would like to fit a more attractive small, say 2ft, raked wooden Nav Mast with a "cross-trees" to our Family Pilot Adele, in place of the current stainless angled pole mast, but have not as yet found one available. I have seen them on some other boats, but does anyone know of such a thing in the chandlers, or have they usually been custom made by owners? I'm suspecting I will need to make what I want or find plans somewhere of such a thing. Any ideas are welcome! Thanks, Clive
