Further to the repairs we had done on the winch and the need for a cover. I got a price for a canvas cover to be made for £70. Because of the potentially short life of this (washed away, blown off or borrowed) I made one from fibreglass. Started by making a male plug over the winch with a plastic pot, cardboard and tape then put 2 or 3 layers of fibreglass over this. If anyone is interested I`ll post a photo of it in place. Tony

Stephen, the winch takes considerable current from the battery. If possible check the voltage at the winch itself which may show up any bad connections or faults with the relay etc. This may require a helper to operate the switch!

Stephen, when I was fault finding ours I took the chain off the gypsy by removing the front guide (there are two screws). Doing this allowed me to check the motor speed in a no load situation, up and down. Perhaps that's worth a try? Tony

Hi, as a new owner of a Mariner I naturally had a survey carried out. It was mostly very good, a few things to sort here and there but the brief test of the windlass was fine. However the anchor chain was said to be in need of replacement. So I fed out the chain using the foot switch all good. I pulled it back up and all fine until the motor just got slower and slower and then stopped. The rest had to be done by handle. The engine was in neutral and running above idle, the meter said there was plenty of voltage. But despite hearing the click of the switch, no action. The trip in the wheelhouse was fine and I pulled and then reset it. It seemed like a power drain but there is no separate battery as far as I can tell and the batteries seemed to be charged. Any hints?

Well the solenoid was fine. Took the winch off and looked inside. Rusted and watery grease! Could not strip out as gears were seized on shaft. Had to send to Simpson Lawrence Spares in Scotland. Very good service. 3 New bearings and a new gear. Lessons learned. Needs regular attention and greasing and I will investigate some sort of a cover to keep the worst of the spray out. Tony

Found it, thanks. It's in the most forward triangular lidded storage space, under the berth cushion. It's mounted on the rear bulkhead at the top, so it's difficult to spot unless you look backwards. Thanks again. Tony

The anchor winch on our Mariner 25 has developed a fault. It will wind down but not up. I suspect the solenoid contact may need attention. Does anyone have experience of this and know where the solenoid is, please? Thanks Tony
