Thanks Robert. I decided to drop down to a 15" prop and was able to try it for the first time yesterday (Cardiff bay, flat calm) and achieved 20-21 knots at around 5000rpm - a definite improvement, and, as you said, a transformation! I could probably go a bit lower but if I wanted a speedboat I have bought the wrong craft, so I think I will stick for the time being. When I have collected some more data I will add to the engine table on this site. Neil.

Hi Neil. Had the same problem on my pilot. Only getting about 4400 rpm from my Suzuki DF70. I was running a 17" prop and reckoned I needed a 13". Searched the forum and the web for info then emailed Hardy for there opinion. They confirmed the suitability and the prop was fitted. Now I top out at 5500rpm which is the recommended max for my engine. It transformed the boat. Sorry its not an ideal answer but I can only recommend trying to source as much info as possible. Regards, Robert.

After much reading in this, and other, forums I have concluded I need to change the prop on my Pilot. It is currently running a Honda BF75 with a 19" pitch and the revs max out at around 4200. I have a good idea where I think I want to be but am loathed to spend £120+ "just to try it". Does anyone know of a 'prop exchange' or 'try before you buy service'? Some years back there was a Chandler in Bristol who held a stock of used props and he would lend one out to test the effect - sadly he is no longer there, although I did see him at a boat jumble last year! Thanks, Neil.
