i bought 1992 hardy pilot about 5 years ago 60 hp yamaha plus a brand new mariner 9.9 four strokei put the right prop on the 60hp 18 knots flat out crusing 15knots.the nine point nine was not getting used i have a well equiped work shop so i thought i would make a tiller.the first problem was when the engine was down the top of the engine was 14 inches below the corner of the boat the second problem was there was nothing for the tiller to connect to i overcome the first problem by turning a peice of oak 16 inches long to reach down to the carrying handle for the engine i then scribed the handle to get the exact shape a tight fit on the handle is important otherwise there would be play on the tiller.i then cut two 4 by 4 inch by 1 inch oak board for each side of the handle i planed one side convex and cut the other concave with a band saw but a jigsaw would do the job.i then cut a peice of the oak plank 4inch by 4 inch for the top.i screwed and glued the two sides to the top making sure they were a snug fit i drilled to holes near to the botom of the side bits then turned a i inch peg then planed a 20 degree angle from the middle of the peg to the one end i could then put the wooden u peice over the handle then put the peg through the holes and wedge in firmly i then drilled a 1 inch hole in the top of the wooden u peice then put the turned oak in to the top of the peice screwed and glued i then made the tiller handle three feet long kept four inches long on the end without being turned this i drilled with 1 inch hole to go over the upright shaft securing with 6 mill nut and bolt so the rudder broke down to three storable parts.ive done 60 miles on the small outboard greatly improving my range i can do six kph in the cardiff bay even better with the tide i can turn the boat on a sixpence its very quiet any body can do this without a lathe or special tools it can be done in soft wood its easy to store under the third berth make sure the engine is bolted to the bracket because if you push it hard into a turn the engine may tilt of if someone is interested in making one for any engine please ask through the forum.hope this helps someone.
