Are there glow plugs fitted to that engine? My VP31 did not (or I never found) a cold start facility

Ray, Usually there is a yellow indicator light showing that glowplugs are operating. To operate glowplugs turn ignition on and turn again to just before engine start position. The yellow light should now come on (there is no click that I can recall) and should be held on for 10-15 seconds before going straight to engine start. If yellow light is defective you should still see that glowplugs are operating by voltage drop on your voltmeter. If engine fails to start first time repeat and hold in glowplug position for longer - you will have to turn ignition switch completely off then on again to do this. If none of this helps you need to replace glowplugs. Steve.

Glow plugs take a considerable current(20+ odd amps)and as such use a relay on the engine. As Steve mentions this is normally operated by the keyswitch, whether you hear the relay 'click' depends upon the sound insulation round the engine. I would not think all the glow plugs would fail at the same time though. You can check them with a resistance testmeter or even a bulb and battery - they have a very low resistance, (about 2 ohms) almost a short circuit. Look on the web for testing glowplugs, for example http://www.ngk-dpower.com/en/technik/technik-tipps/technik-tipp-1/

Fishing 24/Volvo 41A - Cold start/heater plugs apparently not operating. There is no dedicated instrument panel switch nor illuminated heater icon. Is it instigated by the ignition switch (cannot hear any relay click) or is there a cold start button on the engine? Help please its cold out there!
