Hi Fred.......Be vary wery of using too small an engine.......We spoke regerding my boat Pilot 20 Johnnie Cake.....When I first purchased the boat it was fitted with a 15hp Honda...I was using the boat on the non-tidal strech of the river Severn on normal river conditions( approx 3 knot flow) i could achive 12 Knots downstreem & 6 upstream.........with more flow i strugled upstream & on one occasion could not get back upstream against the strong flow after lots of rain....use a larger engine to give a safety margine & get you out of trouble if you need a turn of speed...Steve

A 9.9hp four stroke long shaft High Thrust (Yamaha/Johnson,etc) with Rudder Safe steering attachment would be ideal. That means that you have approx 6 knots capability, economy, and positive steering at very slow speeds.

What is the mimimum engine size for the Hardy 20 to enable craft to maintain steerage and to be used on inland water ways ie lake, river use. Speed is not essential as I will not be in a hurry anywhere.

Dear Dave, If you are new to Hardy craft, then might I suggest that you have a look at this website : www.horning.org.uk This has been created by Craig Slawson, and has a very good Boat Database Section. If you go to the "Search the Design" box and write in 'Hardy' a very comprehensive selection of our boats comes up. It is a good way to familiarise yourself with the various Hardy boats that have been built by Hardy Marine. If I may also put in an Ad for us. You can always join the Hardy Owners Club, and then you can access even more data as a Member. Good luck, and all the best to you, M.O'Connell

I have noted much discussion on the Forum of our website, from readers who have either bought themselves a Family Pilot, or are thinking of getting one. It is with this in mind that I have compiled some basic information, which can be found in the January issue of The Hardy Owners Club members magazine. Some of you may already be quite knowledgeable about Hardys, but there are Hardy enthusiasts out there who are just starting, and need all the help they can get. We can forward specific requests for advice from our members via the Shipwrites page of The Hardy Owner magazine in order to assist you, so why not join up, and get involved with The Hardy Owners Club. Once a member, you will also be able to access helpful areas such as the Performance Database on our Club’s Members Page on our website. New Passwords for the Members Area will be issued in the April edition of our Club magazine. To join up, please visit “Join The HOC” on our website’s Home page.
