Thank you very much for the information. It is still very useful for us because we postponed our journey to the Solent originally planned for last year to this year, which means we will arrive next Monday. So it is just in time for us that the trailer law was changed.

Natioal Trailer & Towing Association - www.ntta.co.uk/law/law/dimension.aspx They quote: Following consultation the DfT have announced the removal of the 2.3metre width limitfor light trailers towed behind a vehicle with MAMless than 3500kg ie. most cars and 4x4's. The width limit for light trailers up to 3500kg is now 2.55 metres irrespective of the towingvehicle.... This brings the UK into line with the rest of Europe. I downloaded this 2nd July 2010. Whilst this is 18 months too late it may be useful to others. I also found Indespension trailers very helpful regarding trailer law.

I Googled "maximum width of trailers" AND GOT THIS........ Dimensions If the towing vehicle has a permissible gross weight in excess of 3.5 tonnes the maximum width and length of the trailer are 2.55 metres and 12 metres respectively. If however the gross weight of the towing vehicle is 3.5 tonnes or less then the maximum permissible width and length are 2.3 metres and 7 metres respectively. In both cases the overall length of the towing vehicle and trailer must not exceed either 18m or 18.75m depending on the type of towing vehicle. go to http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/vehicles/vssafety/requirementsfortrailers Good luck

We would like to spend our summer holidays in the sunny (?) south of England. We will tow our Seawings 254 on a trailer with a VW Touareg. The problem that might occur is that the trailer has a width of 2.50 m and as I had heard there is a limitation to 2.30 m in Great Britain. What about towing the few miles from Portsmouth ferry-terminal to Port Solent marina?
