My Hardy 234 had this trait and most unnerving when first experienced discovered that by adjusting (in my case) the setting of the port trim tab (Stbd switch control, as the switches control opposing sides)the vessel returned to MY control and not hers!!

Andy, Thanks for your response. The engine is a Tohatsu 50hp 2 stroke with power trim. Once the boat is on the plane I do retrim the engine. All weight on the boat is evenly distributed and the crew stand in set places to keep the boat level.I have also checked for water between the floor and hull. I have found that the boat does handle better with more weight in the front, so I am considering putting some ballast forward. Should I have to as this does not seem right? Regards Chris The engine and hydraulic tabs are both fitted coeerctly as per the fitting instructions.

I ran into an issue today with my Pilot where it was weaving from side to side at displacement speed. When I got back to the marina I realised my 5hp engine was not fully up on the bracket, so I think it was catching the water and affecting the steering. Just a thought! Cheers Andy

Does your engine have power trim? If so, are you triming the engine out when you get the boat planing? Is there any uneven weight distribution issues? Have you maybe got a quantity of water lying between the floor and the hull? Has the motor been installed at the right height, ie with the cavitation plate roughly level with the bottom of the transom? Does a crew member move around when this happens? Could you experiment by applying more (or less) trim to the side where the pitch happens? Have you fitted your trim tabs far enough out on your transom? I'd say that Outboard fins would not be as effective as trim tabs and it would be very unlikely that you would need them with tabs installed correctly. Cheers Andy

I have recently purchased a Hardy Navigator 18'. I have fitted a 50hp Tohatsu 2 stroke to it. Since I bought the boat I have had problems with both trimming to get the boat on the plane and also with the boat pitching violently to one side. I have know fitted hydraulic twin tabs to the boat which has resolved the problem with getting the boat on the plane, but it has not helped with the stability problem. I can not control this with the steering and the only way to resolve it is to shut the power off. Would dolphin fins help keep the boat stable or can any one help with other idea's?
