Hi Brendan I have owned a Hardy 21ft motor sailer (OSTARA-Weymouth)for the past 4 years+ they are very sturdy/stable well built platforms (mine is 1985). She is fitted with a 18hp YANMAR 2GM20 diesel that will happily motor all day if necessary (say 4hrs - you will use about 4 Ltrs) and you will cruise at say 5-6 knts. To do equivalent speed with the sails up you would need a Force 3-4. Ensure you have bilge keels for decent sailing characteristics/stability/grounding (stainless steel if possible - they are easy to keep corrosion free and only require a coat of anti-fouling annually). The central keel is cast iron (about 700Kgs I believe), that requires de-crudding annually and U/C, followed by anti-fouling - well secured to the hull (survey will confirm if OK). Engine,Shaft, Prop are well mounted with the inboard gland lubricated by the relevant grease, a quarter turn on the grease applicator before each trip. The propellor has always caused me problems regarding fouling etc (during the summer I snorkel and scrape - about 18 inches below the waterline). This year I am trying Propshield - hopefully with better results. Plenty of room for two, a little crowded if five or more. Steerage inside the cockpit when motoring (good vis), sailing using the tiller also good. Cabin has good toilet facilities, wash basin, gas rings and grill, a comfortable bed and decent locker space. Typical comfortable south coast journey i.e. Weymouth to Isle Of Wight (via Poole)- two days motoring say 10-12 hrs. In conclusion if you don't want to get anywhere fast, then the Hardy is a safe solid reliable general purpose motor sailer - the Genoa and Mainsail are adequate for the job. Happy to discuss further, give me a ring on 01305 773784. Nigel Garbett - Weymouth.

Many thanks Nigel for all your information. Will be in touch if I decide to purchase. just one question - do you have any experience of trailering the boat. One of the reasons I sold my previous boat was because of high cost of winter storage so idealy I need a boat that I can tow and store myself. Hardy would appear to be pretty heavy. Regards Brendan

I have been the proud owner of a Fisher 30 motor sailer for past 6 years and have really enjoyed the experience. Sadly we have recently had to part for various reason. Have been 'nosing around' looking for a smaller boat and have discovered a Hardy 22 motor sailer with inboard volvo engine. As I know absouletely nothing about the Hardy except that they look like a really solid sea going boat I would be obliged for any comments from current or past owners. How are they to sail, what condition would the original volve circa 1980 be in at this stage. Is it possible to trailer the boat and any idea what cost of a trailer might be... Thanking you in advance Brendan

Hello Cmccann I have a Hardy 20 MS and is fine for me, the wife and 2 small dogs. Would have thought 3 kids on board would be too much for a comfortable day out. The 21 MS would be a safer bet. Roger Piper

My suggestion, a late model Pilot SE or if you can stomach the modernised lines, the Bosun. Both trailable and made for the pottering envisage. Dom.

Having just sold my Fisher which I have had for the past 20 years I now seek a Hardy for day outings around Chichester Harbour & the Solent. Must be trailable. Can someone recommend what type of Hardy I should be looking for. (I'm not a fishing type) !!

I have just received photographs of Steve's 21 ft Hardy M/S. She is absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately she is out of my price range, but looking at her I am sure she is worth every penny. He has made alot of improvements in the 2yrs he has had her and she is really cracking. If anyone else likes the sound of her, please contact him, as I am sure she will not be around long. Someone will snap her up ! Thanks again Steve and good luck. I will keep looking ..... All the best Marie

Thanks to both Barry ( No. 2344 ) and Steve ( guest ) for your response, despite the fact that I managed to post my request in the wrong section ( engines ). I will move it to the miscellaneous section next and see if anyone else gets in touch. Regards Marie

Help needed if poss. I have been looking for a Hardy 20 motor sailer for ages. After looking at all kinds of boats for about three years on and off, I am certain that this is the boat for me. I have just sold my small yacht and am saving for my Hardy. I trawl the web sites night after night ( sad case I know ) looking at everybody elses Hardys and when I do find one for sale, it is usually in Scotland somewhere and I figure it will be too dear to bring it down to Kent, or out of my price range. Anyway, if there is anyone out there thinking of selling their 18 or 20 Hardy motor sailer, because they want to get a bigger boat or something, please contact me. Thanks loads, Marie

Hello Barry I assume you have a Hardy 20 not a 21, if that is the case I find my 10 hp Yamaha is adequate for sea use in the Falmouth area. Have used the boat in force 5/6 and heavy swell and engine coped.

Could anybody please advise on the size of outboard for my 21'hardy m/sialor, it presantly has a 10hp yamaha 4 stroke which is ideal for its presant broads use, however i plan to move it to hartlepool for north sea coastal use,im limited to what size o/b i can get in the outboard well, regards Barry.
