To Peter Skinner I have a Hardy 20 motor sailer .It has a 4 stroke Yamaha 10hp outboard fitted that I find powerful enough , is economical and can be easily serviced by yourself with the workshop manual.

Peter, I had a 20 Motor Sailer a few years ago, it was fitted with a Volvo MD7A 13hp diesel inboard, shaft drive. I considered the boat to be underpowered with this engine. Particulars of my boat. LOA ex rudder 19'11'', incl rudder 21'02'', Beam 8'0'' Draft 2'4'', Headroom in cabin only 5'03'' Height for transporting 9'03'' Height above waterline, mast down 7'04'', mast up 22'06''. Total weight about 4400 lbs, Weight in keel 1320 lbs. These boats do what they say, Motor Sail. Yes they can motor but DO Not Sail, well they sail like a caravan. As a Motor Sailer they are a great wee boat, I prefered the inboard diesel model as I was inclined to motor quite a bit. The 21 is a newer version of the 20, a little longer and a bit more headroom Regards,Charlie.

Do you mean a Hardy 20 or a Hardy 21 motorsailer. The Hardy 21 motor sailer weighs (displaces) 2.5 tons and has twin cast iron bilge-keels. Cannot help you with the Hardy 20 though. Is this the one which looks like a Hardy family pilot? The Hardy 21 has three small ovel cabin windows like 'True Love' which is pictured in the gallery on the website. As a matter of interest I am selling my nearly-new trailer for a Hardy '21'.

I would just like to say thank you to John Hicks and Stan Nesbitt for all the help and advice they have given me on this and other maters concerning the Hardy motor sailers. Andy Bartram and Sally Coleman of Hardy Marine also deserve my thanks for the time and effort they spent in sending me useful information. Finally to the HOC Forum for allowing non-members to ask questions in the first place, this is a good site. Thank you John P.S. I hope that did not sound too much like an ‘Oscar’ acceptance speech!!

I am looking to purchase a Motor sailer in the 20 foot range. I have looked at some Hardy 20’s that have V berths in the bow and the toilet amid ships, and another Hardy 20 that had the toilet in the bow and a single/double opposite the galley amid ships plus a quarter berth, yet apparently they are all just called the Hardy 20! In addition to this there are some with inboard diesel and some with outboard motors and just to put the icing on the confusion cake some are called 21 foot but do not appear to be different. Does any one have a definitive spec list with model numbers/names, any advice that can given to me would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you for your help in this matter.
