I have just brought a Hardy 18 with a 1998 mercury 75 on the back. I know it will have plenty of power , just wondered how stable they are in choppy sea & how far out people take them safely.

hi i have owned a fishing 18 for the past 5 years. i removed a 50 hp engine because of dissapointing performance. i put on a mariner 90 hp. vastly improves the boat. 38.9 knots maximum even when carrying fish and some lobster pots. the boat handles the power easily. and more economical to run than the 50 hp was.

10 years ago when the Evinrude 50 was stolen off our Hardy 18 Pilot Hardy advised me not to go over 60hp. We fitted a Mariner 60 and it transform the boat, especially in terms of low speeed handling. Hope this helps Mike

Hi Chris, Sorry, but I only visit the HOC forum occasionally. Assuming your hull is not out of shape, or engine mounted off centre, I would suggest the trim tab on the outboard needs adjusting. I have a Navigator 17/18 with a Honda 45 and the steering is balanced and easy. Regards p.s. If you are a boating 'nut' you might find the fora at www.iboats.com interesting.

I have a hardy fisher and it was fitted from new with twin evinrude 35hp engines. I go fishing out of Tiree and the twin engine senario can give piece of mind.

Hi, I run a Fishing 20. My engine is a Mercury 60hp big foot with an over-pitched 13'' prop. This gives me great steerage power and an excellent turn of speed returning good fuel economy. The 20 spec. from Hardy is a recommended 75hp max.

Hello I have a French Hardy 18' with a 60 hp 2 stroke Yamaha. I can cruise 24 knts ... I have a big problem when I have four men in the boat. I have a propeller 13'1/4 for 14-1/2. He dont cruise more 10 knts. I have a high thrust 8 hp 4 stroke Yamaha for the fishing times with I cruise 5/6 knts . I cruise in the gulf of FOS on sea Mediterranea. good luck Gégé 13 (if you can write in French!!) hello I have a French HARDY 18' with one YAMAHA 2 Stroke 60 HP and a YAMAHA 4 Stroke high trust 8 HP.

Ref Peter's Question regarding max engine size for Hardy 18 Fisher: 5th March - I have a Mariner 60hp 2 stroke on my Hardy 18 Dayfisher and that seems powerful enough! - approx 20 kts plus or 16 kts cruising, but as Dominic says, for clarity, seek advice from Hardy. All the best, Richard.

Hi Peter. Lots of stuff on recommended engine size in this forum. Best to browse that. May be found under 'engines/performance' or 'miscellaneous' Failing that, contact Hardy Marine direct for guidance/tel numbers see www.hardy-marine.co.uk From memory, people are adding up to 75hp and sometimes 90hps to the 'Fisher' but that could be exceeding their design spec. Ultimately, best to check with Hardy. Exceeding safe hp will have insurance ramifications. Good luck Dominic.
