I forgot to add in my previous message that the boat I have is a Pilot. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have a similar request as Simon's in that I'm looking for a canopy central bar for a Hardy 20 SE. Does anyone know where I can get one from. Do Hardy's themselves still supply them? Regards Ron

Hi Does anyone know what sort of paint (if any) I can use to paint my Acrylic canopy on my Navigator, where it has faded. It is the original canopy fitted at the factory. Thanks

Oh, Does anyone have a nice straight Hardy Navigator Canopy Bar they'd like to sell? I'm about to get one made - but can only get Stainless steel - I'd prefer Aluminium for lightness. Thanks Simon.

Just to report back, My new Navigator Canopy and Sunroof (hatch cover)from Suffolk trimmers is here and is very strong and of good quality, especially compared to many covers that I see. They use a reinforced heavy PVC type material - I've seen these OEM Hardy covers go on for over 20 years - amazing! Ok, this material is heavy and thus probably not good for a large boat, but seems perfect for a small Hardy canopy (Mines a Navigator 18)- very tough. The stitching is tidy, well placed zips. The sunroof has come with the turn button eyes not fitted - these being loose in a bag - bit of a job to fit, but at least I know they'll fit - could have told me though. On the whole, very very happy, great quality product perfectly suited to a small Hardy and should be easy to clean. Thanks Suffolk Trimmers (Shetland Boats)!! (FYI I'm nothing to do with Suffolk Trimmers - Quality Canopies and covers are of course also available from other manufacturers).

Have just had a replacement acrylic cover made for my Bosun 20.If there is anyone in the Solent area looking for a very good fit and thorough discussion of the options, I can give them details of the lady. Price was £700, using my existing frame.

In East Yorkshire there's only one man to go to. Sean Leng 07970936790.None of this using the old stretched, pulled old canopy as a copy. Sean makes a template in plastic. Marks all the window and zip areas etc. on the template. He then returns and fits the turnbuckles, press studs on canopy and boat, this with the new canopy in place. Fit it yourself and Sean won't fit the Makers Name patch he's so proud of his work. Only down side? Sean's in so much demand best to wait till it's critical. He'll discuss your requirements and then will improve on them with his experience. He's not cheap but compared with the alternatives he's very good value. Currently making a canopy for "Cracker Too" will supply photos on completion if required. He made a canopy for a former Norman of mine and two years after it still looks brand new and the fit's perfect. Martin.

We own a Hardy 20 River Pilot and a few years ago a Lady in Cornwall sent us some swatches for a new cover, we have since tried to contact this Lady but she has moved does any one know if she still makes new covers ? Her name is Ms D Chaplin, former address - 17 Poldrea, Tywardreath, PAR, Cornwall PL24 2RA. Or if anyone knows of another Company or person who makes Canopies at a reasonable rate, Thank you.

TO THE EDITOR: Have been looking at Pilots/bosuns/seawings recently and think I may have found a Bosun near home but I do not think it has a canopy. Have you had any luck with a supplier yet. When I rang Hardy's they suggested Suffolk Trimmers but the above comments are not helpful. They do have one in stock but if you know of any others now I would be grateful for information.

We are the proud owners of a Navigator 18 having bought her two years ago. Our only problem is, getting the canopy back on after a great day out! Its a shame retirement comes with arthritis! Are we the only people who find it difficult? Are we doing something wrong? Any tips or advice would be gratefully recieved. No problem when she's out of the water, we can see what we are doing!

Hello Everyone, I have read with interest all your comments about canopies. I will be looking into this personally as I agree that we need to source reliable suppliers who can provide a bespoke service for an individual's needs, at a reasonable price. From my own perspective, I have seen a variety of styles and materials, and you most certainly 'get what you pay for'. There are no two ways about that. I will also follow up some of your comments about the dissatisfaction you experienced with some manufacturers, which are of great concern. Since becoming Editor, I have made concerted attempts to improve the situation as regards supplies to Members of the HOC (Ref: Special Offers), but this is 'work in progress' and there is still a lot that can be done. I spend much of my time chasing prospective suppliers with a view to getting them onboard as regards advertising in our Club magazine and on our Website. As you will see, some offer good deals to our Members. As I have only just completed the April edition of The Hardy Owner magazine, I have not had much time to deal with these issues, but I can assure you all that I will look into the situation and report back to you all a.s.a.p. Regards, M.O'Connell Editor The Hardy Owner

Further to my recent posts on this site expressing my dissatisfaction with covers from Suffolk trimmers some 2/ 3 years ago. I have just had a new set of Acrylic covers made for my Hardy 27, by a company in Pembroke called Cleedau Upholstery ( ask for Galina ) 01646 680665. Using my original Hardy covers as a template, ( not the ones made by Suffolk ) they have made me a very high quality, well made set of covers , well stitched, exactly to size, and even advised some improvements to the fastening arrangements of the original set , that have all worked out excellently. Plus the price that I paid was very reasonable, and therefore I would gladly reccomend this company to anyone , nice to be able to do that for a change.

I purchased an off the peg replacement cover for my Hardy Pilot from C J Marine at the Southampton Boatshow. I believe they are based in Chichester. I have finally got around to fitting it in a recent dry spell. I am so very pleased with the result. The cover is well made, the fitting instructions were simple and clear. It has really increased the looks of the boat. I think I paid around £800 for it and that included a new set of support poles. Plus they threw in a storage bag for me. Very very pleased.

Would just like to say that I bought a new canopy from Suffolk Trimmers Jan/Feb 2010. Cost me £650 I requested a replacement canvas with zipped in sides. I recieved one with turnbuckled sides and a large packet of fittings that I was supposed to fit. I telephoned their office and merely requested what I ordered and was met with abuse and tantrums, threats of high court judgements and the phone slammed down on me by a Ms Reinman. I finally spoke with Mr Reinman who is listed as a director, I sent him the fixing details and had a new hood to replace. This new hood was made of a vinyl type material and is a poor fit. I sent a note of my dissapointment and photographs to Mr Reinman and todate, not had the courtesey of a relpy. I think the service was very poor and I certainly won't be sending them any Christmas cards.

Suffolk Trimmers recently quoted me for a replacement canopy for my Seawing 234. £500 for PVC and £700 for Acrylic. Really would like to raise the height of the awning at the back to improve rear visibilty through the window and also for more head room. Would be interested to know if anyone has had such an awning made?

Vic (alias 'Foolhardy'). Can you help Norman (above) and I out with your canopy contact in Lowestoft? I am sure the readers would be keen to know. The quality of your blue canvas canopy was excellent and very reasonably priced. Thanks so much for the tour of your 'Foolhardy'. Lovely 25 must say. It was a bumpy passage back to Southwold but fun riding out the waves nonetheless. All the best with future plans and regards Dominic and Nicola

I have a Hardy 20 Motor sailer which two years ago needed a complete new canopy to include new side and rear windows. The job was done perfectly to include new zips, clips and straps for £200. The job was done, using the old canopy as a template, by Gemta Designs, Ms Di Chaplin, who is based in Par,Cornwall. Her telephone number is ( 01726 ) 815028. She specialises in making/mending boat covers, tents, awnings lorry covers etc. I have spoken to her to check she is happy for me to give out her phone No., and she is, but says that because costs of materials have risen ( they are oil based ) the total cost now should be £200/300 depending on complexity

Pity Suffolk Trimmers or some other competent canopy maker did'nt place an advert in Hardy Owner Mag, there seems to be quite a bit of business up for grabs.

I am actually a member, but misplaced my Mem No. I don't have a canopy, but I do have a hardly used full winter cover for a Hardy Family Pilot. It fits over the whole boat down to the rope fender with tie downs. Can be used when towing as it is heavy duty. E-mail me on ashtec@tacho.co.uk if it is of interest to anyone.
