Hi Bernard, It's a shame you're so far away as I could otherwise have sorted you out. The club does have a resident marine surveyor (Me) and if you still have a need or questions, give me a call (details in the HOC magazine) and I'll guide you with some pricing that your local surveyors may charge and point you in the right direction. It is unusual to be asked for a survey of an 18' boat - a lot of companies don;t bother until the vessel is 23' long or more. Best Regards Simon.

Hello Bernard, my fishing 20' is insured with Saga, underwriters are Amlin Syndicate 2001 at Lloyds. At the time (Aug 2015), no survey was required as the value of the vessel was less than £10,000. Not much help if you are a nipper, (less than 50 yrs of age) but might help others. Steve, measure the boom length, multiply by 2.5 to give approx mast ht. From memory 0.5 base X ht gives area of mainsail. Use the same area for the headsail. Very approximate but should satisfy an insurance company. I would have thought a marine insurance company would have had that info for a Hardy already.

Hi Bernard, my insurer asked for the same but they settled for an email from the boat yard I bought it from saying it was sea worthy. I use Noble Marine. Cheers. Phil

My insurance company are asking for an "on shore" marine survey before they will insure my hardy navigator. Can any member tell me how much this might cost and who would I need to contact in the Swansea area please. Conversely, are there marine insurers who are recommended by members.

As I am also attempting to purchase a similar boat I would like to see any replies you receive, particularly about the engine.

From Steve Coley (No. Guest ( awaiting Membership number) 30 Oct 03 I have just purchased a Hardy 18 motor Sailor ( still on the blocks at the moment) and am trying to find out the approximate sail area for insurance purposes, all I know at the moment is she is sloop rigged and has a plastimo furling headsail(Genoa) I also notice that there is no windscreen motor or wiper fitted , do I need one? and if so how do I get hold of one. She is fitted with a 25HP yamaha autolube 2 stroke engine,is this adequate for inshore coastal passages and What speed can I expect under power and when sailing. I would like Anyone in my local area to contact me if they can assist with a trip /sail from dartmouth to Brixham in the near future ( November) on 01803 883141 and anyones comments Please.... Steve Coley ( Brixham, Devon)
